Bill and Melinda Gates began to discuss their divorce with lawyers about two years ago, the Wall Street Journal reported on May 10.
Melinda has been working with a number of lawyers since 2019 to discuss the split after 25-years of marriage.
The billionaire couple announced on Monday they had ended their marriage.
“We no longer believe we can grow together in the next phase of our lives,” they said in a joint statement on Twitter.

Melinda was concerned about Mr. Gates having contact with late American financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, which became one of the contributing factors of the split, according to a former Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation employee.
After the New York Times reported that Mr. Gates had met with Epstein on numerous occasions, Melinda and her advisers held a number of calls in October 2019.
The New York Times also reported that Mr. Gates once stayed late into the night at Epsteins Manhattan townhouse.

Bridgitt Arnold, Mr. Gates’ spokeswoman, said both men had met multiple times to discuss philanthropy.
She also said that Mr. Gates stands by his 2019 interview with the Wall Street Journal and declined to comment further. A spokeswoman for Melinda didnt respond to the reasons why she was seeking a divorce.
